Examine a recently released survey commissioned by Stand Together, first in a series of longitudinal surveys that aim to track cultural attitudes and fears about technology. This group discussion will be a deep dive into the survey’s findings to learn about persuadable audiences and the topics where more research and issue education are required. Together, we’ll brainstorm and share opportunities for stronger storytelling in the tech and innovation space.

Use scenario thinking to game-out possible outcomes within the ongoing antitrust and data regulation policy debates. As a discussion group, you’ll review short summaries of recent academic thought and policy decisions, then engage in structured brainstorming to think through potential outcomes over the next one to 10 years.

Explore the current U.S. liability structure for free speech online (including its social and economic benefits), examples of how America’s current free speech framework is being challenged through legal cases (ex: Fields v. Twitter, Herrick v. Grindr, Doe v. Deray McKesson), and legislative proposals on the state and federal levels. Discussion topics include underlying concerns inspiring these challenges –  terrorist content, calls for protests, harassment online and how platforms have or have not responded to them. Will the legal framework governing online speech change? Can technological shifts reduce the worst aspects of the online experience? How will Americans communicate online 10 or 20 years from now?

The story told is that market-friendly or apolitical tech talent is out there building things, leaving the policy world dominated by self-selecting market skeptics.  How is this story wrong or incomplete? How can we give this story a different ending? What can we learn from other domains and others across the tech policy landscape? In this session participants will challenge this story, share lessons learned on building talent in other fields, and brainstorm ways to identify, develop, and engage talented people who want to do tech policy.

It’s an incredible time to be alive. But in this time of disruption, many people are understandably concerned about the challenges that come with such rapid change. Some are calling to block new technologies, impose harmful restrictions on current ones, or otherwise limit the pace of innovation. As a part of the Stand Together community - CKI and CKF seek a better way: a culture and policies that embrace innovation and new ideas while working together to adapt to disruption rather than holding back progress. Tech and innovation offer a unique set of challenges, opportunities, and areas of interest available for grantmaking. During this conversation, a diverse panel of funders granting in this space will highlight their objectives and offer a chance for an intimate Q&A on opportunities for 2020 and beyond.

While the media focuses on Congress, many of the most interesting challenges in tech policy are taking place in the states. In this penultimate session, we’ll explore some of the most pressing state-based proposals as well as how to navigate tech policy at the state level and develop effective educational strategies.
