Maury Richards was selected as Chief of the Martinsburg Police Department in October, 2015.
Before Martinsburg, Richards served as a Lieutenant and 24-year veteran with the Chicago Police Department. A leader in community policing, he innovated community-based and regional approaches to the problem of gang violence.
Maury has brought a community policing philosophy with him to Martinsburg, dramatically increasing police-community partnerships. Richards is the creator of The Martinsburg Initiative, the innovative police-school-community partnership and model for effective opioid prevention.
Maury achieved his Doctorate in Education from Northern Illinois University and has Master’s Degrees in Criminal Justice and Public Administration.
